WAR-RELATED-PTSD: AN INTREGRATIVE APPROACH TO TREATMENT

Thousands of military service men and women returning from war lack a healthy way of conceptualizing the major shift in “the self’ that is created by their experience. The mythic Warrior’s Journey can serve as a powerful vehicle for perceiving and exploring contemporary warfare and its residual effects on our nation’s veterans, their families and our entire society.

Our workshop delves into the archetypal journey that encompasses Separation, Ordeal, and Homecoming as a framework for understanding the entire cycle of the veteran’s experience. This approach puts war-related traumatic wounds, identity disruption and soul loss in the context of a human being’s larger life experience. The workshop presentation will include stories of experiences shared by veteran- members of Veteran’s Heart Georgia. The perspective offered in this workshop adds dimension and structure to the losses and identity changes that most interventions do not address.

Participants in this workshop will be able to

1.Describe the archetypal warrior’s journey as it pertains to the present day experience of those who suffer from the effects of war

2. Identify when and how in a warrior’s journey potential crisis in identity-self-soul can occur and how to help the veteran client relate to these

3. Develop new perspective regarding current PTSD treatment models and strategies

4. Discover how this approach can be incorporated into a variety of clinical and educational settings and integrated into one’s own healing modalities.
